Mobile phone providers are set to become involved in a price war as mobile network Three is now offering a free upgrade to 4G. Three are adding 4G to their network later this year and plan to make it a standard feature on all smartprice plans. This will come as a shock to competitors as they currently charge a fee for the ultrafast 4G services. The mobile network EE is the only company which has 4G available at present and £5 extra is charged on top of standard bill prices.

Those who currently want to use the service must purchase a mobile phone which provides the system, such as the Nokia Lumia 920 or an Apple iPhone 5. Customers must shell out hundreds of pounds to buy these phones in order to get access to 4G whereas Three plan to offer these services as part of their current price plans for an iPhone 5. This contract can cost between £34 to £44 per month and an additional £99 for the handset itself. The same type of contract is offered for the Samsung Galaxy SIII and costs £29 to £31 per month and an additional £29 for the handset. The 4G service is five times faster than the 3G system making surfing the web on laptops, tablets and smartphones much easier. This is has been taken into consideration by Three whose spokesman Dave Dyson says: ‘As we add the next wave of technology to our Ultrafast network, we’ve listened to our customers and thought long and hard about the right way to do it. We don’t want to limit Ultrafast services to a select few based on a premium price and we’ve decided our customers will get this service as standard.’

This is contrast to the service offered by EE who charge their customers between £36 and £56 a month depending on the amount of data they want to be able to download as part of their package. Many countries worldwide also offer 4G services but at approximately 20% more than standard services. Owners of the Apple iPad with Retina display, the Apple iPhone 5, Sony Xperia Z, Nokia Lumia 920 and the Apple iPad mini will be able to benefit from Three’s 4G upgrade as part of their standard package. However, the new ultrafast-ready LTE versions of the Samsung Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note II will also be available as of next month and, in February, the BlackBerry will launch on Three making device choice more varied. The Three network focuses coverage on 50 towns and cities of the UK and coverage in the UK as a whole will rise from 55% to 80% of the population by March this year.
